Mesh partitioning is a modular system of welded steel wire mesh panels fixed between vertical steel posts to divide, secure and segregate areas within warehouses, factories, distribution centres and commercial premises. Unlike blockwork or plasterboard stud walls, mesh partitioning maintains visibility and airflow through the enclosed area, which keeps natural light in the space, allows existing lighting and ventilation to work unaffected and — critically — does not disrupt the coverage patterns of overhead sprinkler systems. Because the system is bolted together rather than built in place, it can be dismantled and reconfigured as operational requirements change, and taken with you if you relocate. A typical single-skin partition assembly consists of a floor channel, upright posts on centres to suit the panel width, infill mesh panels, top rails and one or more access doors. Types of Mesh Partitioning
Single-skin mesh partitioning is the most common and cost-effective option, used for general workspace segregation, storage area separation, driver waiting rooms, tenant separation in multi-let industrial units and light-security store rooms. Security mesh cages use heavier wire, closer post centres and reinforced door frames to create enclosed secure storage for high-value goods, tools, IT equipment, bonded goods and controlled substances. Full-height caging extends from floor to underside of ceiling or roof deck and normally includes a roof mesh, so the enclosure cannot be climbed over or reached across the top. Anti-collapse rack-back mesh is a specialised partition variant fitted to the rear and ends of pallet racking to stop items falling through into adjacent aisles. Machine guarding panels, which share the same modular construction language, are used to enclose machinery, robotic cells, conveyors and automated production lines so that operators cannot reach moving or dangerous parts. Choosing between these types is a function of what the partition needs to do: contain a hazard, deter theft, define a work area, or all three.
Panel Specification, Wire Gauge and Aperture
Mesh panels for partitioning are typically manufactured from cold-drawn steel wire, welded at every intersection to form a rigid grid, then framed in rolled steel angle or tubular section. Common wire diameters range from 3 mm for standard segregation work up to 5 mm for heavy security applications. Apertures commonly available include 50 × 50 mm and 50 × 100 mm — a smaller aperture makes it harder to pass items or fingers through the mesh, while a larger aperture reduces panel weight and cost. Standard panel heights start around 2.1 m for a workshop-height partition and extend upwards in increments (typically 2.4 m, 3.0 m, 3.6 m, 4.2 m and higher for tall warehouse enclosures). Finishes divide into two main options: hot-dip galvanising, which gives the best corrosion resistance and is often specified for damp environments such as cold stores or external plant compounds, and polyester powder coating, which allows the partition to be finished in a chosen RAL colour — commonly a two-tone such as safety yellow with charcoal grey posts, or a corporate colour to match branding.
Doors, Locks and Access Control
The access strategy is often the most overlooked part of a mesh partition specification. Standard doors are single-leaf hinged with a mortice lock or a hasp and padlock, but many sites need something more considered. Double-leaf hinged doors give a wider clear opening for pallet trucks; sliding doors save the floor sweep space needed for a hinged door and are useful in tight aisles; and lift-off panels are used where large plant needs to be moved in or out infrequently. For managed access, cylinder locks can be keyed alike or on a master-key suite so that a single supervisor key opens multiple compounds, or the partition door can be fitted with a proprietary electronic access control reader wired back to the site's existing system. Where the partition also functions as an escape route, panic hardware and outward opening leaves are specified so the door meets fire escape requirements without a key.
Installation and Site Survey
A mesh partition installation begins with a site survey to record the floor level, the underside of any obstructions overhead (steelwork, ductwork, sprinkler pipework, lighting), the location of existing services, and the intended flow of people, pallets and forklifts through the space. From that survey the layout is drawn up showing every post position, panel run, door swing and any cut-outs required. On installation day the floor channel is set out and drilled into the concrete slab using anchor fixings; posts are bolted in place, plumbed and levelled; panels are lifted between the posts and secured; top rails and doors are hung last, and the whole assembly is checked for line and level. A typical warehouse partition of moderate size (20–30 linear metres, single door) can be surveyed, manufactured and installed within two to three weeks lead time, with the on-site works normally completed in one to two days depending on obstructions.
Building Regulations, Fire and Sprinklers
Because mesh partitioning is an open system rather than a solid wall, it is generally treated by insurers and sprinkler designers as not creating a separate compartment — sprinkler coverage from above passes through the mesh and continues to protect the enclosed area, which is a key advantage over solid stud walls that would otherwise require the sprinkler layout to be redesigned. That said, if the partition creates a room that requires its own means of escape under building regulations, the door hardware and swing direction must be planned accordingly.
